I've been working for company as a Marketing Director for a few years now and have ran across a few SEO companies, both agencies and consultants, some good, some not so good. With the content management system we use and the various other upteen plugins that make our site work, its been an uphill battle, but I've been able to decipher the ins and outs of good and bad SEO with the help of books, blogs and trial and error. Also, because of the nature of our product (tobacco products), I've had to rely on an almost 100% SEO strategy as Google Adwords and Facebook both frown on our industry. We are killing it locally, but nationaly we have some room to grow. Most SEO companies I've spoke to have no idea how to increase ranking on a national retail site, local NAP seems to almost always be their specialty. I wonder if others out there are having the same issue ranking a national e-commerce site and whether or not it would be a good niche to fill?

Starting SEO business is not easy. This market is very competitive: there are many SEO agencies and individual freelancers. 10 years ago it was much easier to rank a website. All you had to do is to optimize your website and get few backlinks from quality directories. Very often it was links with targeted keywords.

In 2012 everything has changed when Google released Google Penguin and Panda updates. A lot of quality websites that previously used directories lost their rankings. After that, I know exactly, some SEO agencies left this market because search engine optimization became more difficult. It is not enough to just get few quality links to see your keyword in top of SERP.

Some time ago I’ve written a post, expert roundup “Should You Use Anchor Text & Keywords in Link Building Post Penguin? Answers From Experts”. Almost each response was: “No, you don’t”. But it does not matter that it is impossible to start a successful SEO agency nowadays. I suggest working on social media because there you may find your future clients. Also don’t forget about blog commenting. But not just rubbish comments or spam. For example, Neil Patel in this post explained very well why you should pay attention to this kind of communication. $25,000 lead sounds very good.

Don’t forget about positive feedbacks, especially if your SEO agency is local related. If you have few negative feedbacks, you may lose potential clients as they do not want to invest their money in not successful SEO company.

Another very important thing is to read the latest information because in this niche everything is changing month-by month, year-by-year.
